Happy Friday! Today's morning work was a sheet of insect riddles. We went over the answers together during our morning meeting. One of the Fun Facts of the Day hearkened back to our study of Australia. Did you know that the flying fox can have a wingspan of six feet? After reading the morning message, the first graders responded to the question about how long it would take the caterpillars to become butterflies. Responses ranged from one week to one year. Ask your child what he/she said!
The super bonus word on the Unit 31 spelling test was official. During the morning independent work time, the students read, and responded to, an article about lupines. They also solved riddles about shells.
Our Student of the Week was Colin. We learned that he would like to be a Ninja, his favorite animal is a dog, and he enjoys swimming after school. Colin also showed us the amazing Star Wars Lego creations he designed and built. We laughed at the funny jokes he told us!
Today was the final day of music classes in first grade. Next Monday, Ms. Graziano will return for another round of P.E. with us.
During math, the first grade friends solved word problems inspired by Miss Rumphius. Solving the problems should not have posed any problems. The main goal of this activity was to practice good math habits when recording one's thinking. I stressed the importance of showing one's work and reminded the students that the solutions would not just be numbers. For example:
*There are eight ships in the harbor. Four more ships come to the harbor. Now how many ships are there?
8 + 4 = 12 12 ships

Following math, I showed my first grade friends the painted lady butterfly caterpillars in their little cups. It was impressive to see how many caterpillar cups there were! Next, it was time for the students to make caterpillar observations. The in-person learners each received a caterpillar cup at their desks. The at-home learners were shown one of the caterpillar cups on their computer screens. Everyone drew what they saw in the cup and wrote their observations. A student at home requested that I measure the caterpillar they were seeing. The in-person learners then requested rulers to measure their own caterpillars. Students shared their observations with each other. Toward the end of the class, I pointed out the little black speck perched on the food. We figured out that it was skin the caterpillar had shed. Ask your child to share his/her observations with you!
DEAR Time segued into outdoor recess for the in-person learners who put a great deal of energy into running from one shady spot to another to keep cool. Many of them did eventually decide to play Hot Potato together. 😁
During social studies and closing circle, I read the book Trapped by the Ice!: Shackleton's Amazing Antarctic Adventure to the class. The first graders also put together flip books about penguins in Antarctica, just perfect for reading to a stuffy!

Enjoy the weekend! Please check the class website later in the weekend for the learning plans for next week. Thank you!
