Happy Friday! The first graders spent time on their penguin posters today. Ms. Miller also visited Room 104 to give the morning announcements. The in-person learners led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. After chit-chatting for a bit during the morning meeting, we took care of our morning routines. One of the Fun Facts of the Day informed us that the Brachiosaurus, a dinosaur who weighed more than twenty elephants, walked the Earth 152 million years ago. We also learned that honeybees have hair on their eyes! 🐝
During the first morning literacy session, the students took the Unit 30 Spelling Test. The super bonus word was solar system. Later, the first graders completed phonics exercises related to word endings and base words.
Our Student of the Week was Dean. We learned that a dream of his is to go to the moon, he would like to be an engineer, and two of his talents are building and cooking. Dean also showed us several of his Star Wars Lego figures, his coin and stamp collections, and his books about space. We also saw that Dean is a jigsaw puzzle master!
Following lunch recess, we watched a video clip which showed how coins are made. The first graders then continued to work in their money word problem mini books. We will play Money Bingo and "I Have. Who Has?" with money on Monday!
In today's science class, the students widened their exposure to the multitude of insect species on our planet by participating a a read-aloud of the book The Icky Bug Counting Book. Ask your child to tell you about some of the insects described in the book! For example, what do kissing bugs do and what is special about paper wasps?

After DEAR Time and Recess, the students were shown a Mystery Object. They made some excellent guesses as to what it could be before I revealed that it was whale baleen. The first graders were shown examples of toothed whales, like the orca, and baleen whales, like the humpback whale. Ask your child to tell you the function of baleen and explain the Antarctic food web shown below.
During independent work time, the first graders chose from the following whale activities: coloring a picture of humpback whale and her calf, solving a maze to lead a whale to krill, and/or following directions to create whale origami projects. Lastly, during the Closing Circle, we continued reading Antarctic Journal: Four Months at the Bottom of the World. In today's portion of the book, we were given a description of the behaviors of Adelie penguins.
