Happy Thursday (aka Friday Eve)! The first graders worked on their penguin posters for morning work before we began our 151st morning meeting of the year. Ask your child to explain why 151 is CLI in Roman numerals rather than CVI! One of our Fun Facts of the Day was that the Statue of Liberty is just over 151 feet tall from the base to the torch. We also learned that Bugs Bunny was originally called Happy Rabbit!
As revealed in the morning message, we read the book Miss Rumphius together The first graders completed a sequencing activity in which they put events from the story in order. Later, we worked with some of the vocabulary words in the story. The students matched words and pictures on their own papers, then we checked the activity together. I encourage you to read Miss Rumphius again with your child. Chat about the details in the text and the illustrations!

This week's handwriting lesson focused on the D'Nealian capital letter D. The in-person learners in Pod B had their pictures taken for School Picture Day. We were happy to see another friend from 104 lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance during Ms. Miller's announcements today. During math, the first graders organized the pages of a mini book about money before beginning to solve the word problems. We'll spend time on this tomorrow, too.
In today's science lesson, we identified the characteristics that all insects have in common. Ask your child to tell you what makes an insect an insect! We used the posters above to guide part of our discussion. We also took some time to observe the crickets delivered to the classroom before I gave them to Fluffy. Our cricket friend from yesterday continued to sing to us during class. This led to a discussion about cicadas. We will have to do some research to see if these two insects make their "music" in the same way!
The first graders continued learning about animals that live in Antarctica and the people that visit the continent. This included beginning the book Antarctic Journal: Four Months at the Bottom of the World during our closing circle.
Parents, please check the revised learning plan for May 14 to prepare your child for class on Friday! Also, just a heads up that we will share frog jokes with each other and play a money game with I Have, Who Has? cards on Monday. If your child has not receive these items in the mail yet, please let me know. Thank you!
