Today was the 142nd day of the school year. The first graders completed a scuba diver craft for morning work. After the in-person and at-home met for the morning meeting, we completed all our morning business together. The Fun Fact for the Day was that there are 142 staircases at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Ask your child how many staircases are in Bell School!
The super bonus word on the Unit 28 spelling test was abacus. During the morning independent learning time, the first graders completed language arts activities with a dinosaur theme. They counted syllables in words and used a table of contents. Early finishers also had a word search just for fun.
Albie was our Student of the Week. We learned that his favorite subject is math, his Nana wrote a book for him, and his sister thinks she rules the world. Albie also showed us photos of his family, introduced us to his stuffies, and read the book I Want My Hat Back to us.
The math lesson of the day began with a read-aloud about how coins are made. The first graders then sorted coins and determined the values of set of dimes, nickels, and pennies. Let's remember to write the cent symbol when showing amounts of money less than one dollar.

Other than DEAR Time and a recess break, the remainder of the afternoon was spent exploring New Zealand. The first graders were engrossed by Punga: The Goddess of Ugly, a book based on the traditions and culture of the Maori people.. Ask your child to tell you what happened in the story! The students also were shown video clips of dancers and soccer players performing the haka dance. We also learned about the kiwi bird. During independent work time, the boys and girls chose activity sheets from a packet about New Zealand.
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!
Here is the fourth, and final, installment of my read-aloud videos for the book The Sign of the Seahorse. Enjoy!
The learning plans for the week of May 3 will be posted tomorrow. Thank you!
