Happy Day 140 of First Grade! During our morning meeting, our fun fact for the day informed us that Niagara Falls State Park includes 140 acres that are underwater. We looked at photos of the falls and Ms. Jensen showed us a couple video clips she made on a recent visit to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. After this, we checked out this week's snail mail envelope. The students added pictures and stickers to the Australia page in their passports. They also enjoyed receiving a real shark tooth. The Question of the Day was: Would you want to swim with sharks? Ask your child how he/she responded and why!
As indicated in the morning message, the students received an introduction to the coral reef ecosystem. We read the National Geographic Kids Reader: Coral Reefs. Ask your child to tell you three things he/she learned from the book! We will dive deeper into the topic tomorrow as we investigate the Great Barrier Reef and life in the oceans around Oceania.
This week's D'Nealian handwriting lesson focused on the capital letter K. Students wrote it with their air pencils, markers, and regular pencils. They also reviewed the capital letters I, L, T, J, U, and H.

During independent work time, students had time to study the Unit 28 spelling words and read books from the Australia collection on Epic. This was followed by music class and lunch. We then watched Ms. Miller's morning announcements after Quiet Time. During math, we looked out the coin charts the students completed yesterday before they checked out their new math books. Go Math Chapter 7 includes lesson about money and telling time. The first graders then completed the Show What You Know for the chapter and we explored the topic of money using play coins.
Since Taste of Australia was on the agenda for today, I thought it would be the perfect time to think about what dinosaurs ate as well. Looking at the teeth of dinosaurs fossils is a great way to determine whether they were herbivores or carnivores. We took a surprise field trip to the Museum of the Rockies to participate in the program "Exploring the Teeth of the Mesozoic Era." Students also received a dinosaur diet sorting activity to complete. Ask your child to tell you about dinosaur teeth!
Following DEAR Time and a recess break, it was on to Taste of Australia. Thank you to all the families who helped make this event happen! There were a handful of vegemite fans in the house. The tim tams and lamingtons were a big hit. Ask your child to tell you about his/her likes/dislikes from the Taste!
After the Taste of Australia, the first graders had a choice of activities for the final independent work time of the day: draw a picture of your favorite Australian animal or add stickers on the map of Australia activity mat. We ended the day by reading the book Where the Forest Meets the Sea during Closing Circle.
