Happy Day 137 of School! The first graders chose coloring or activity sheets from their Earth Day packets for their morning work. During our morning meeting, I learned that there are a great many thrill seekers in Room 104. Many said they would like to spin 137 feet high in the sky on the Delirium Ride at Kings Island amusement park in Ohio. Yikes!
Next, after completing the rest of our customary morning business, we moved on to the Unit 27 spelling test. During the test, I reminded the students to check the size of their letters and indicated how many small letters, tall letters, and/or letters that fall were in some of the words. The super bonus word was purpose. |
We learned more about Audrey P. during Student of the Week sharing time. She told us that her favorite subjects are science and math, she has soccer and staring contest skills, and she likes bunnies. Audrey also read a book about her name to us. Finally, she shared that a dream of hers is to have everyone back together in school.
During the asynchronous literacy session in the morning, the first graders learned the meanings of word parts found in the names of dinosaurs. They used these word parts to design their own dinosaurs based on names they created. Ask your child to show you his/her dinosaur and explain its name!

An extended recess followed music and lunch today. What a nice treat to have on Fridays! We watched the recording of the morning announcements and then turned our attention to math. Today's lesson consisted of practicing the double digit subtraction skills from our most recent math chapter. The first activity sheet was assigned to the class. The next one was a matter of individual choice. We'll keep the packets handy to use at other times.
During social studies, we returned to Australia to learn more about marsupials. We read two articles and answered questions about kangaroos and Tasmanian devils. Ask your child which Australian animal he/she would like to meet in person and why!
Drop Everything and Read time was followed by our afternoon recess break. The in-person learners added new books to the Little Free Library and checked the condition of the Peace Garden. Upon rejoining the at-home learners, all the first graders received instructions for assembling a dinosaur flip book. The flip book indicated whether specific dinosaurs were quadrupeds or bipeds. It also showed when the dinosaurs lived, how they defended themselves, and how large they were. The first graders used their flip books to solve dinosaurs and then write their own.
We enjoyed the silly book Gorgonzola: A Very Stinkysaurus during Closing Circle.

Parents, please help prepare your child for school by checking the learning plan for the week of April 26. It will be posted on Sunday. In addition, please make arrangements to pick up instructional materials at school between 9:00 and 3:00 on Tuesday, April 27. Thank you!
Also, be sure to take a look at the Room 104 photos on the class Shutterfly site! It looks like some families may need new invitations to the site. Please let me know if you are not able to view the site.
Finally, please enjoy this story with your family! It was written last year, but I would suggest keeping your eyes open for the creatures described in it. Who knows where they will turn up next!
