Happy Thursday/Friday! The morning work assignment for the first graders was to continue working on their subtraction word problem mini books. After this, we read the daily message and colored the 133rd gumball in our gumball machines during our morning meeting today. Here's a fun fact for all those space enthusiasts out there: Every 133 years, the same phases of the moon occur on the same day of the year and the same day of the week. Our other fun fact informed us that a baby's body has 300 bones, but an adult's body only has 206. Ask your child how this is possible!
After a quick break, it was time for the Unit 26 spelling test. The super bonus word was scavenger. A little later, the first graders read a Science Spin article about a geyser that shot garbage. You may wish to try the soda geyser activity this weekend!

Kai was our Student of the Week. We learned that he has an adorable pet rabbit and a cute hedgehog. Kai has taken skateboard lessons and his favorite subject is math. Kai also showed us a great picture of his family and told us two hilarious jokes!
In the afternoon, we listened to Ms. Miller's announcements after Quiet Time. Today is American Sign Language Day. We had some internet connectivity issues in the afternoon and could not watch this short video about ASL. Please take a couple minutes to show it to your child.
During math, we worked on solving multistep problems using bar models to organize our thinking. Students had to determine what operations to use to solve word problems. We worked our way step-by-step through a few problems. However, I think we need to spend more time on this lesson so we will revisit it on Monday.
We focused our attention on skeletons in science today. First grade isn't too early for comparative anatomy, is it? We looked for similarities and differences in the skeletons of a frog, human, horse, and stegosaurus. Stella Dino was thrilled to be part of the class! The first graders also did their best to identify modern animals based on their skeletons. Ask your child to show you the skeletons and tell you about them!

Following DEAR Time and a recess break, we played a game based on the story Amos & Boris. We will continue playing the game next week. I told the students that if they want to beat their opponent Ms. Kaim, they might want to look at the questions and think about the answers ahead of time. 😊
During social studies, the students created turn-and-learn wheels to match the names of Australian animals with their pictures. They also wrote the names in alphabetical order. We will learn more about these animals soon! Finally, we listened to the last of the Terrible Stories during Closing Circle.

Parents, please check the learning plan for April 19 this weekend so that your child is prepared for class on Monday. Students learning at home may need to be extra patient with those of us at school next week. There will be many new students at school so it will probably take us longer to do things at first. If I am not on the call on time, just wait a bit. Thank you!
Lastly, here is another bonus slideshow for your child's reading pleasure. If you haven't read yesterday's bonus story, you can find it here.
