Happy First Day of Autumn! The Question of the Day was: Did you enjoy Ladybug Day? The first graders read a ladybug poem with friends for morning work. Ask for a recitation at home!
The second spelling test of the year was held today. The super bonus word was hourglass. The Unit 3 spelling test will be held on Friday. After the spelling test, we read the book What About Ladybugs? The students then finished sharing the stories of their names with each other. Before heading out to recess, the boys and girls participated in the first Second Step lesson of the year. We focused on listening to learn. Part of the lesson involved playing a game called My Turn, Your Turn.
During reading, the first graders read and used vocabulary words from Blueberries for Sal. The students put their listening skills into practice by following verbal directions. The result was an array of colorful pails of blueberries! We also read a fiction/nonfiction book pairing: I Know a Bear and Black Bears.
We reviewed tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs today. As part of the lesson, we completed a page in the math books together. A key aspect of the lesson was modeling how to explain one’s thinking and respond to questions in writing. The math books were sent home for further review. There will be a test on Tuesday.
The two specials classes of the day were library and civics. During the latter, the students reflected on what it means to be a good citizen. Our final subject of the day was science. The boys and girls made observations of their brassica plants. The plants have certainly grown since we last looked at them! Ask your child to share what else he/she noticed about the plants today.
We will read and think about being bucket fillers tomorrow.
