The Question of the Day was: Did your special letter arrive in the mail? The majority of students answered yes so I can now reveal what all the secrecy was about! The first graders learned the parts and proper format of a friendly letter. We read Splat Says Thank You! and then brainstormed ideas of things for which to thank our parents. After this, the students wrote personal letters to their parents. Later, they addressed envelopes. Finally, with the help of Ms. Wagner and Stella Dino, we took a secret field trip! We walked to the neighborhood mailbox, sealed the letters with a kiss, and sent them on their way. The boys and girls were very excited about surprising their parents. Parents, I hope you enjoyed being on the receiving end of this Thanksgiving surprise.
Today's morning work was a reading assignment. They boys and girls used their The Goat in the Rug books to place the rug-making steps from the story in the correct sequence. After this, they helped me generate a list of sequence words to use in their writing. The students wrote the words in their Fantastic First Grade Field Trip books so that they could be referenced in the future. They also finished writing the chapter about the secret field trip.
Before going to P.E., the students took the Unit 1 Phonics test about consonants. Later, during math, the boys and girls wrote two-digit numbers in word form, expanded form, and standard form. We practiced solving problems by reading carefully and carefully proceeding step-by-step. This included showing our thinking by including notes in the margins of the problems.
We watched part of the National Geographic video: Really Wild Animals: Amazing North America. The boys and girls then packed up and we took an extended break outside. During this time, the boys and girls played, but also learned about the javelina, an animal found in the American southwest. We read The Pig That is Not a Pig and Don't Call Me Pig! while we were outside. After this, the students received their travel passports and we returned to the classroom to enjoy a Taste of North America. While we were away, a group of parent volunteers had prepared the food for the students to sample. Thank you to everyone who volunteered in the classroom today and everyone who provided the food for us. The boys and girls had been looking forward to the event all day and were eager participants. Ask your child what his/her favorite item was!
