Dear Friends,
Let’s focus on China today. It is one of the countries in Asia, our Continent of the Month. Over 1.4 billion people live in China; that's more people than in any other country in the world! Over 1.1 billion people in China speak Mandarin; that's more people than any other language in the world!
While you attend Bell School, you will learn Mandarin and Chinese culture from Mr. Qiao. In fact, some of the Room 104 girls have already learned a Chinese dance that they will share with us when we get back to school!
Love,
Ms. Kaim
- One of the famous landmarks in China is the Great Wall. The main section of the Great Wall of China is 5,500 miles long. How long do you think it would take you to walk from one end of the wall to the other? Comment below!
Morning Work
- Construction on the Great Wall of China began over 2,000 years ago as a way to defend the people of China from invaders.
- Build your own Great Wall in your home!
- Make your wall as long as possible.
- Use whatever you would like to make your wall: boxes, cans, blocks, pillows, shoes, rolled up socks. See what building materials you can find!
- Fun Fact: Mortar made with sticky rice was used to bind stones on the Great Wall of China. Do NOT use sticky rice on your wall.
- Who will try to get over your Great Wall? Will it be an army of unicorns, a herd of dinosaurs, a stampeding sister, a bouncing brother, a mischievous mother, a fearless father?
- Good luck defending your kingdom from invaders!
- Ask a parent to take a picture of you and your Great Wall of________! I will put it on our Shutterfly site to share it with everyone in the class.
Bonus Items for the Day
- Tell someone a joke. Here's a silly one!
Q: What is purple and over 5,000 miles long?
A: The Grape Wall of China!
- Read Grandfather Tang’s Story. The link will take you to a read-aloud version of the book.
- Make your own pictures using tangram pieces.
