Happy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Are you brave? Morning Work involved solving word star puzzles that named animals from Africa.
After solving some of the puzzles together during our morning meeting, we moved on to spelling. This week's words all have the /or/ sound.
During reading/social studies, we read more about brave Harriet Tubman in the Scholastic News article Escape to Freedom. Ask your child to tell you the ways Harriet helped others throughout her entire life.
Our math lessons this week will focus on the number 100. Today, we explored big numbers. First, the boys and girls told me numbers that they considered to be BIG. Next, I introduced the number googol. This is a one followed by one hundred zeros. Then, we read the book Can You Count to a Googol? The short answer is no. Finally, each student created a part of what will become the number googol to display in the classroom.
The specials class of the day was STEAM. After this, our science lesson included material related to both plants and matter. The students were given some background information about the site of tomorrow's field trip: North Park Village Nature Center. They also learned the basics of how sap from the sugar maple tree can become maple syrup. We will have the opportunity to actually tap maple trees during our trip. Maybe the sap will be running!
We ended the day by exploring the kalimba, an African thumb piano. The students each received a simple version of a thumb piano to decorate. They also experimented with a variety of sound chambers to create different sounds.
Students should wear boots and warm clothing tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25. The majority of our field trip time will be spent outside. Students should also bring a lunch. We may be back in time to eat in the lunchroom, but just in case we are not, please send a lunch from home. Regular lunch bags will be fine.
