Happy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Do you know how to make a six-sided snowflake? During morning work, the students folded and cut to create snowflake designs in a new way.
After our morning meeting, we explored the schwa sound and the Unit 16 spelling words. Then, it was time to make Ferdinand puppets and prepare a hill for his flowers. Each table group painted part of the sky and the grass. Now we just need a cork tree!
Following a recess break, the students participated in a lesson about cork trees. They learned what cork trees really look like and how the cork is harvested. Each student received a wine stopper made of cork to use in creating a true or false book about cork.
During math, the boys and girls received new math books. Chapter Three focuses on basic facts and relationships. We will work on using different strategies to add and subtract. We will also work on addition and subtraction fact fluency. Students completed a Show What You Know before going to lunch.
In the afternoon, the students participated in a STEM challenge. During Quiet Time, they could see these items on the board: a ruler, a pair of scissors, a 12-inch piece of masking tape, and two pieces of construction paper. They were then introduced to the challenge: make the longest chain possible using these supplies. The students were given time to work independently on a plan. They were then given time to work out a plan with their assigned teams. After this, they were given the materials and the chain making began! After about 30 minutes, time was up and the chains were placed on the board. Unfortunately, we did not have time to measure the chains or debrief about the experience, but we will do so tomorrow. Ask your child about this challenge!
The afternoon continued in the computer lab. This was our final day to work on the shapes projects. The students learned to animate their slides. We will return to the computer lab during fourth quarter to create timelines of our lives. The final class of the day was art.
There will be some farm-related activities tomorrow in preparation for next week's trip to Historic Wagner Farm.
