The Question of the Day was: Are you more like Ferdinand or the other bulls? We created a double bubble diagram using information from The Story of Ferdinand. The diagram showed some of the similarities and differences between the two. After this, we looked at the Question of the Day again and talked about the reasons students had for making their choices. One of the things that was true only for Ferdinand was that he liked flowers. The boys and girls used a variety of materials to make flowers for Ferdinand. They even added perfume to give the flowers a lovely scent for Ferdinand to enjoy. There will be other components to this activity next week!
Today's morning work was a shape activity sheet. Students tried to determine how many squares were in a drawing. During handwriting, they practiced writing the D'Nealian letters j and r. Before going to lunch, the first graders worked on the Chapter 2 Test about place value skills.
After Quiet Time, we revisited the investigation in which the students used screens to separate small solids in a soup mix. Students used what they learned in that activity to separate pictorial mixtures of beads with transparencies of screens.
When the class returned from P.E., they enjoyed listening to the book Stranger in the Woods. In the story, two children provide food for the woodland animals in the winter. As a service project to our local bird wildlife, the children in 104 made pine cone bird feeders. They covered the pine cones with vegetable shortening and then added bird seeds.
Winter Family Night takes place between 6:00 and 8:00 tonight.
There will be a guest speaker in the class tomorrow morning!
