In recognition of Squirrel Appreciation Day, the Question of the Day was Do you like squirrels? Morning work was a "Copy the Squirrel" drawing activity. Later, we participated in another live streaming presentation. This time, we "visited" the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina to learn about squirrels. Did you know there were colorful squirrels like the Indian giant squirrel or the Prevost's squirrel? Ask your child to teach you something new about squirrels!
During lunch, a local squirrel peeked in one of our classroom windows.. He must have been excited about this special day for squirrels! We continued the squirrelly activities by reading the funny book The Squirrels Who Squabbled. The squirrels in the book finally figured out the value of sharing. After finishing the story, the boys and girls wrote about a time they shared something with someone.
The first graders in 104 also spent time learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. today. We read the book What is Martin Luther King Jr. Day? After this, we used our Scholastic News to find out more about Dr. King and what he believed. We watched a video clip and looked at photos of Dr. King. We designed a memorial poster to help us remember Dr. King. The students chose the headline, photo, background, border, and message. Your child has a copy of the poster to keep.
The specials class of the day was Library. Students also continued to take turns on their Middle of the Year reading assessments. During spelling, we looked at the Unit 15 words. We sorted them by whether they had digraphs, blends, or both. We solved analogies using the words and discussed their meanings.
Today's math lesson provided practice in comparing three-digit numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. We will review the entire chapter about place value tomorrow.
Our final event of the day was to create woolly sheep like Anna needed to get her coat in A New Coat for Anna. However, our sheep were made of paper and the wool was made of cotton! While making the sheep, the students watched a live webcam that features sheep on a farm in New York. Try visiting the site to see if the sheep are still eating and sleeping in the barn!
We will have Flat Stanley mail call again tomorrow!
