The Question of the Day was: Have you ever surprised your parents? We spent time on a special project today which cannot be revealed yet. The students have promised not to spill the beans!
The boys and girls worked on a variety of projects that were in progress this morning. These included the weaving project, the Leaf Man project, and the October chapter for their memory books. They also practiced writing the D;Nealian lowercase letters f and b.
The two specials classes of the day were financial literacy and P.E. They played hockey in the latter and were introduced to the concept of goods and services in the former.
Everyone in the school participated in a lockdown drill today. The boys and girls hid and were (mostly) quiet during the drill. We did have to have a discussion to clarify that sitting/laying/leaning on top of each other was not a safe practice under any circumstances.
Today's math lesson focused on classifying numbers as odd or even. We also counted the pajamas we have brought in so far. As of today, we are up to ten pjs for our Pajama Drive! During science, the first graders examined several rectangles made of different materials including wood, metal, and ceramic. Ask your child what properties these solids had.
Finally, we read the book Whale in the Sky, looked at photos of totem poles, and checked out carved artifacts from the northwest coast of North America. The boys and girls began coloring their own totem pole models and thinking about the stories their totem poles will tell.
We will return to our Junior Great Books tomorrow!
