The Question of the Day was: Do you know how to weave? This led to a weaving project inspired by the book The Goat in the Rug. After examining loom and wool samples, the boys and girls learned how to weave their own rugs using paper. They used strips of construction paper and pages from old calendars. We will put the finishing touches on these rugs tomorrow!
The specials class of the day was P.E. Back in 104, the boys and girls practiced their spelling words, worked in their phonics workbooks, and continued a special writing project they began yesterday. More about the latter will be revealed in the near future!
The first graders also received new math books today. We read a math story about whales and the students completed a show-what-you-know about number concepts. Following lunch recess, the boys and girls enjoyed an extended Quiet Time by reading with stuffed animals from North America.
During science, the boys and girls examined the solids they investigated yesterday again. We identified the materials from which they were made and created a list of properties. After this, we decided whether or not each of the seven solids had certain properties. Each child recorded our findings on a data chart. Ask your child about the solids and the following properties: round, pointy, hard, soft, flexible, rigid, smooth, rough, transparent, and opaque.
We continue our investigation of solids tomorrow!
