The Question of the Day was: Do you have a passport? After taking care of morning business, we had our morning meeting to get prepare for the adventures of the day.
The morning was spent taking a whirlwind tour around the world. The boys and girls traveled to the other kindergarten and first grade classrooms to participate in cultural experiences from other countries. Ask your child about their time in the United States, China, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Mexico, and Kenya!
Room 104 became Kenya in the Around the World experience.. The boys and girls read the book Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain and learned how to play a traditional game of strategy called shasima. Mr. Kosko visited us and learned how to play, too. Ask your child to teach you!
The specials class of the day was Music. After this, the first graders showed me that it was possible for them to walk down the hallway back to 104 without talking! :) The boys and girls then practiced their spelling words and their handwriting skills. They also received a tour of the North American artifacts, specimens, and other items that they can explore this month.
Finally, we began another project. We read the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. The students then used paper and fabric leaves to create their own leaf creatures. After I modeled writing a story for my Leaf Frog, they each took first steps in writing stories for their own leaf creatures. The boys and girls were really on a roll with this activity, but we had to stop for the day. We will continue the writing process tomorrow. Perhaps they will come back to school tomorrow with even more ideas to include in their stories!
We will visit the computer lab for the first time in first grade tomorrow!
