The Question of the Day was: Did you ever shoot a ball through a basketball hoop? Following the morning meeting, we reviewed yesterday’s pollination lesson and wrote a description of it for our research logs.
We also thought about all the wonderful experiences we’ve had so far in first grade. As the students shared their memories, I typed them. Doing this provided an opportunity to learn about typing on the computer. The boys and girls then chose the ideas they wished to include in their personal memory books. These became their September chapters, which many students have already started to illustrate.
The specials class of the day was P.E. Check backpack mail for a skill sheet from Mr. C. During reading, we read the imaginative book A House is a House for Me. Ask your child to describe the book to you!
In the afternoon, the boys and girls enjoyed an extended Quiet/Exploration Time. We then moved on to another planting experience in science. The first graders planted pumpkin seeds from a variety of pumpkins. Our hope is that they will sprout in time for Pumpkin Day. Ask your child why it will not be possible to actually get pumpkins from the seeds we planted.
The focus of today’s math lesson was identifying and naming equal parts of circles, triangles, and rectangles as halves, thirds, or fourths. After this, we moved on to social studies during which the first graders created flip-books to illustrate the differences between rural, suburban, and urban communities.
We will learn about firefighting in different communities tomorrow!
