Happy Picture Day! The Question of the Day was: Did you bring your best smile to school? The boys and girls proved that they did just that when we went to the auditorium to have our school pictures taken right after morning announcements.
After that, we looked at the Unit 5 spelling words. They all have the /oo/ sound spelled with oo or ew. We found rhyming words, talked about word meanings, discussed present and past tense of words, and solved analogies using the words.
During our later-than-usual morning meeting, we talked about the garden clean-up on Sunday. The boys and girls who participated with their families shared what they did with the rest of the class. Then everyone had a chance to help out the garden space. We brainstormed ideas to put on signs that would remind students how to treat the space. The first graders then made the signs and we went outside to put them in the garden. After school, we had added three more chrysanthemum plants. Thank you to everyone who participated! I'll try to give you more warning time should I plan another day like this again!
Following a recess break, the students completed a project related to Make Way for Ducklings. We talked about all the different kinds of animals that hatch from eggs. Next, the boys and girls looked for pictures of these animals in magazines, cut them out, and glued them onto a big egg shape. Mrs. Mallard would have been very surprised to see all these babies hatch from her eggs! Ask your child what animals he/she placed on his/her egg.
Today's math lesson focused on partitioning rectangles with equal-size squares and finding the total number of squares. We used the terms row and column as well as estimated how many tiles would cover a space. Finally, we read the book A Cloak for the Dreamer.
The two specials classes today were library and civics. During the latter, the students learned about leaders in different places. Following civics, the class received a tour of the new areas in the classroom that they will be able to explore. We now have a shapes/fractions center, a How Do Seeds Travel? addition to our plant area, a houses and homes around the world center, and and an animal homes center.
The final event of the day was checking on our brassica plants. More plants have flowers now. We reviewed the reason for flowers and the importance of pollination. Not having any pollinators in our classroom, it was up to us to pollinate our brassica plant flowers. Ask your child about this!
We will write in our First Grade Memory Books tomorrow.
