The Question of the Day was: Do you have a globe at home? During morning work, the first graders solved problems involving 2-D shapes. We discussed how important it is to read questions carefully. For example, “draw two 2-D shapes with 7 angles in all” does not mean to draw two shapes with 7 angles each. The words “in all” were key to understanding what to do. Later in the day, the boys and girls sorted shapes by attributes such as the number of angles.
The main reading activity of the day was the Beginning of the Year REACH literacy performance task. It was based on the book Harry the Dirty Dog. We also read the sweet book Friendshape by Amy Krause Rosenthal. Following up on yesterday’s article about choosing kindness, the boys and girls read different school scenarios and then talked about them in small groups.
There will be many wonderful learning experiences this year. Today, the first graders began working on memory books to record some of these events. First, we read the book When this Box is Full by Patricia Lillie as an introduction to this project. Next, the students each created a title page, copyright page, dedication page, and table of contents. Then, the boys and girls received blank books, numbered the pages, and glued in their papers. We will get to the actual business of sharing and writing ideas for the book tomorrow!
There continue to be developments in our brassica and wheat plant investigations. Ask your child to describe what he/she observed today! The photo below may help you with this task. (The penny is not part of the investigation; it is just there for scale!)
During social studies, the first graders used their Map Champ Atlas books to begin learning about different kinds of communities where people live and work. We read and discussed the similarities and differences between urban, suburban, and rural communities.
We will have our first American Sign Language class tomorrow!
