Happy drizzly Wednesday! The boys and girls enjoyed somewhat damp conditions during morning and lunch recess. This was the perfect time to bring up the idiom like water off a duck's back.
The Question of the Day was: Did you bring or wear a jacket to school? Morning work was to continue the 2-D shape lesson we started yesterday. Later in the day, we built on that lesson by learning about the angles of shapes. Students once again used rulers to draw the lines of shapes.
During reading, we read and discussed the Scholastic News article When Words Hurt. We watched a brief video clip about choosing to be kind and played a game to help us decide what to say in various situations. The students also responded in writing to questions about the article.
This week's handwriting lesson focused on the D'nealian letters a and d. After I modeled the correct letter formations, the first graders practiced the stroked with their air pencils. Then, they practiced in their handwriting books with their actual pencils. I was proud of the way they concentrated on training their hands to do this task!
We ended Quiet Time by reading the book The Curious Garden. After this, we looked at the brassica plants. We were happy to see our first brassica plant in bloom! Ask your child to tell you about the parts of the brassica flower and plant he/she sees in the photos below! The boys and girls also sequenced the steps to show how a seed becomes a plant. Finally, we in celebration of our first flowers, we read the book The Reason for a Flower by Ruth Heller. Your child should be able to tell you the reason for a flower is to make seeds!
Following P.E., the first graders received new Map Champ Atlas books. We will use these throughout the year to build our map skills and learn about the world. Today, we identified different parts of the book and used the Contents and Index. We will learn about different kinds of communities tomorrow.
Parents, please check backpack mail for two notes about upcoming October projects. Thank you!
