The Question of the Day was: Are you a bucket filler? This led to a discussion of different ways to fill someone’s bucket. The boys and girls then began working on individual posters about being bucket fillers. Ask your child what he/she has written so far!
During reading, the class identified the setting, main characters, problem, and solution in Blueberries for Sal. They recorded this information on a circular graphic organizer.
Financial literacy and P.E. were the specials classes of the day. During the former, a lesson about wants included a reading of the book If You Give a Dog a Donut. During the latter, the class participated in a school-wide shelter in place drill.
Today’s handwriting lesson included a preview of the correct formation of all the lowercase D’Nealian letters. The students received handwriting practice papers using their names. Each letter had a dot marking where to begin that letter’s first (or only) stroke. Completed papers were sent home.
We looked over part of yesterday’s math test today. The students made corrections and additions to their own papers. We still have the second half of the test to examine together.
During science, we checked on our temporary class pet and looked at photos of the cicada. We will bid him a fond farewell tomorrow. Our brassica plants were in need of a break from first grade hands so we started another plant investigation today. The boys and girls learned about grains, a type of plant people eat. They then set up observation sheets and planted wheat seeds in straws. Ask your child what we hope to see in the days ahead!
Our last class of the day was social studies. We looked at the globe and the map on our rug to locate and name the seven continents and five oceans. The lesson ended with a game of “Where’s Stella?” Ask your child about this!
The first graders will participate in a special service project tomorrow!
