It was far from a normal day at school today. The building was unusually quiet. Only nine Room 104 students were in attendance. During our morning meeting, we discussed COVID-19 concerns and reasons for school being closed for the next two weeks.
My little band of students helped me put materials in manila envelopes for their absent friends. Thank you, parents, for picking up the school closure work packets at the end of the day. Please let me know if you have any questions about the contents.
On the academic side of the day, the first graders read a Scholastic News article about how Chicago dyes the Chicago river green every year on St. Patrick's Day (well, almost every year!). The students also completed a couple St. Patrick's Day activity sheets including one that asked them to name ten things/people that make them lucky. If your child was not in class, ask him/her to try this exercise, too!
The specials class of the day was STEAM. The boys and girls chose 100-Page Books to read. We also looked at the homophones in Spelling Unit 23 and read the book Dear Deer. Parents, please give your child the spelling test at the end of the week. No cheating!
Finally, we spent time examining fossils and other dinosaur specimens on loan from the Field Museum. Holding coprolite (dinosaur poop) is always a big hit!
The class pets all have temporary homes while the schools are closed. Thank you.
Please keep yourself and your family members safe during this difficult time. I will be checking my email regularly Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Blog posts will resume once we return to school.
