Happy Day 101! The Question of the Day was: Can you explain what leap year means? The morning work assignment invited students to reflect on, then write/draw about the amazing day we had together on Day 100. The boys and girls received certificates and bracelets to celebrate the completion of 100 days of hard work.
Catherine shared her Student of the Week board. We learned that she would like to be a paleontologist, she has the same birthday as her grandpa, and her favorite food is pizza.
The super bonus word on the Unit 20 spelling test was machine. American Sign Language and P.E. were the specials classes of the day.
The boys and girls learned how to play mancala, a traditional African game of strategy. First, they watched Stella Dino and I play a game in order to learn the rules. Next, they decorated egg cartons to make their own mancala game boards. Lastly, they used little stones as game pieces when playing with each other. There will be more time to play mancala on Monday when we conclude our study of our continent of the month with a Taste of Africa celebration.
The first graders also watched a video and completed a project about leap year. The "leap" theme was then extended to include lessons about frogs. We read both fiction and nonfiction books about frogs. The boys and girls enjoyed the "derdnuh" snacks they created yesterday. They then labeled a diagram showing the life cycle of a frog and used their knowledge of frog vocabulary to unscramble words. The students also each received a reference sheet about frogs and toads found in the Chicago area, a frog life cycle turn-and-learn wheel, and a frog jigsaw puzzle. Happy Leap Day tomorrow!
