It was, of course, another busy day in first grade! It started with the discovery that everyone's desk was now in a different place in the classroom. Ask your child where he/she sits now! The Question of the Day was: Have you ever seen a mallard duck? From there, we moved on to the Me on the Map project from last week. The first graders finished the activity today. Be sure to ask your child to name his/her city, state, country, and continent.
Other activities today included spelling practice, daily folder work choice, P.E, creating the October calendar page, adding to our tooth charts, and math. During math, we worked on making three dimensional shapes before moving on to identifying the number of sides and vertices of two dimensional shapes. The boys and girls used rulers as straightedges to draw lines to make shapes. This was challenging for many. Please help your child practice drawing a straight line while holding a ruler.
The final event of the day combined math and social studies, With the awesome assistance of their fifth grade buddies, the first graders colored and labeled the continents on a map of the world. They then assembled these two-dimensional pieces into three-dimensional models of the Earth. Everyone was excited to see the globes take shape! The globes were sent home, but they are rather delicate so they made need some repairs by the time you see them!
We will learn how to write the D'Nealian lowercase letters a and d tomorrow.
Reminder: CPS Family Income Information Forms must be returned whether families qualify for the free and reduced lunch program or not. If you do not qualify, or you do not want to provide your income information, please just print your child's name, include your signature, and write "N/A" on the form. Every form returned helps ensure important funding for our school. Forms are due by Tuesday, October 15th.
