The first graders encountered a small batch of papers on their desks when they arrived today. After checking green folders for notes and work, the boys and girls put the work in their folders to take back home.
The Question of the Day was: Did you play outside this weekend? Morning work was a quick maze. After the morning meeting, we moved on to spelling. This week’s spelling words have either the short o or the short e sound. We examined the words, discussed their meanings, found rhyming words, solved analogies, and identified synonyms. The spelling test will be given on Monday, September 23 instead of this Friday. Friday will be all ladybugs all the time!
The first graders were formally introduced to two class pets that have been quietly with us since the first day of school. Crabby and Shelly the hermit crabs joined us for the start of reading. They stayed tucked in their shells for a while, but then became intrigued by the story: A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. Following recess, the boys and girls wrote a quick mini-story inspired by the adventures of the hermit crab in the story. Ask your child where his/her hermit crab walked and what he/she found there!
During math, the boys and girls made picture graphs to compare data. Look for a math homework worksheet for Lesson 10.3. Either, or both!, sides should be completed and returned to school tomorrow.
After lunch recess, the first graders wrote their assignments in their students planners and read books while listening to music during Quiet Time. They then enjoyed library class and were happy to check out books for the first time in first grade.
International Dot Day is celebration of courage and creativity that takes place on September 15ish. This year, the first graders joined the kindergarteners in Room 106 for this special event. They listened to the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds and then made their own dot art. Make your mark and see where it goes!
After returning to 104, the first graders planted brassica seeds in little cups of soil. Students came to the planting station two or three at a time while their classmates colored a sun picture. Ask your child if he/she was CCD when doing this. When all the seeds were planted and watered, they were placed under a grow light. We will make frequent observations about what happens over the next several weeks.
The boys and girls will add to their hermit crab projects tomorrow. It is also highly likely that there will be a fire drill tomorrow or Wednesday. Please speak with your child about the importance of fire drills and ask him/her to tell you the procedures we follow at school.
