The first graders began the day with a poem about the number 100. After this, they continued working on two activities from yesterday: the 100 Chart Puzzle and the 100 Countries List. A popular indoor recess choice was reading 100-Page Books. The boys and girls also took a phonics assessment about long vowels. We also read the book Leonardo the Terrible Monster in which Leonardo learns to be a wonderful friend.
We began a new unit in math today: 2-digit addition. The Show What You Know to get ready for this chapter involved reading directions carefully. The sentence Add 2. was important in creating the addition sentences. Only 9 students completed that section correctly. Yikes! Please go over this paper with your child tonight.
During reading, we revisited the story Those Shoes in our Junior Great Books. The students used their imaginations to think about what Jeremy might have been dreaming about when the story begins. They also decided whether or not they would have worn the Mr. Avery shoes back to class if they had been in Jeremy's place. Students chose a position and listened to the reasons given for choices made. Some changed their minds after hearing what others had to say. Ask your child what he/she thought!
After P.E., we read the book Pedro's Rocks. This lead to an investigation of river rocks. The boys and girls worked in pairs to sort a set of river rocks in a variety of ways. Ask your child about the sorts!
Our social studies lesson focused on Egypt. The students enjoyed the books Bill and Pete and Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile.. They watched a video clip about mummies and pyramids, worked on a word search and hieroglyphic riddle, and enjoyed the 100 Piece Snacks they made yesterday.
We will work on another one of our Day 100 activities tomorrow. We will also get together with our buddies!
