It was great to be back in school today! I enjoyed reading the letters the students wrote to me describing what kind of good choices they made yesterday. I will send the letters home tomorrow so that you can use them as conversation starters in your family.
After a phonics skills worksheet for morning work and our morning meeting, the students were presented with the following scenario (but with lots of added detail for dramatic effect!) What if you woke up one morning, looked out your window, and saw THIS?

They shared wonderings about the situation, wrote about it, talked with tablemates about their writing, and wrote some more about it. Most writing jobs were still in progress so we put them in special writing folders to return to another time. Ask your child about his/her ideas! We also read the book Pig the Winner.
The students practiced the proper formation of the D'Nealian lowercase letters j and r. They learned about services in financial literacy, and reviewed the latest lessons in math. Math workbooks were sent home today. You may wish to review the last four pages of the book with your child in preparation for a test tomorrow.
The specials class of the day was P.E. After this, the first graders learned about Russia through pictures, a nonfiction book, and a fiction book. The latter was the book The Littlest Matryoshka. After reading this book, the students began the process of creating their own version of nesting dolls.
The final event of the day was a science lesson from Micah's mother. Our guest speaker taught us more about the different states of matter. She used liquid nitrogen and a variety of liquid ingredients to make two kinds of ice cream. What delicious solids! This was one of those rare times we will use our sense of taste in science class! The students were quite impressed by the liquid nitrogen. Ask your child for details!
We will continue working on the Russian nest dolls as well as another project related to A New Coat for Anna tomorrow.
