I was happy to see my first grade friends after being out sick yesterday! We began the day with a Blueberries for Sal activity for morning work. Next, we moved on to science. The first graders observed their brassica plants. Ask your child to tell you how the new leaves are different from the first leaves that sprouted.
Before recess, we went out to the butterfly garden to release our ladybugs. They began moving around when their habitat was placed in the sunlight. Most students personally held a ladybug or two before releasing it. Ask your child about the ladybug release!
During reading, we read a Scholastic News article titled "You Can Do It!" We completed some activities online including watching a video clip and playing a game together. This was a great introduction to the idea of having a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. We read about how we can change our thinking to focus on getting better instead of giving up. This is something that will be reinforced and practiced throughout the year.
The math test proved to be challenging to most students. It was a good thing that we had just focused on not giving up! Even though we worked really hard, we did not finish before lunch. We will take more time tomorrow to complete the test. It might be helpful to look over the last four pages in the math book to review the concepts and skills covered in class.
The afternoon saw the first graders traveling around the school. They started upstairs in the gym for P.E., moved on to the computer lab to work on their shapes projects, and then returned to 104 for buddy time. During the last event, the fifth grade buddies helped their little buddies make three-dimensional models of the Earth. If the paper globes don't make it all the way home in one piece, a little tape should be all you need to make the repair.
We will visit the Chicago Botanic Garden tomorrow. It should be a great experience!
