Happy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Do you own a watch? I encouraged the boys and girls to wear their watches to school--if they are analog, not digital. If your child does not own a watch with a face or you do not have a clock with a face in your home, please consider getting one. We used practice clocks to help up tell time to five minute intervals today. Having an analog clock at home will provide more opportunities to practice telling time skills. Thank you!
The chicks made it back safe and sound from their weekend homes. They were placed in the chicken coop to give them more space. Many of the chicks are sporting impressive wing feathers and a few have tail feathers beginning to grow. We wrote about this in our egg/chick books. The boys and girls also added egg shell and egg shell membrane samples to their books We read the book Tillie Lays an Egg and continued reading The Hoboken Chicken Emergency. Ask your child about the changes in our chicks!
In non-chick news, the first graders were introduced to the Unit 32 spelling words. The rule is that when a word ends in a consonant and then y, you change the y to i before adding es to make it plural.
In reading, we shared and discussed more wonderings related to the story "The Mud Family" in Junior Great Books. The boys and girls also responded in writing and drawing to two prompts related to events in the story. A second reading session about phonics involved using words with the digraph wr-.
We will work on a service project for the Bell School Butterfly Garden tomorrow!
There will be one more Chick Open House in Room 104. This will be on Wednesday, May 22, from 3:30 to 4:30. Feel free to come check out the chicks with your family!
