The Question of the Day was: Will you be kind and encouraging to others today? Everyone responded yes and we had a great start to the day! Unfortunately, not everyone could sustain the kind behavior for the entire day. Impatience, angry voices, rude noises, and inappropriate contact with each other were the main entrees on quite a few menus today. I anticipate a much better day on Monday!
Despite losing time due to Interruptions of Nonsense, we still had a very productive day! Morning work invited the students to write about and draw ways they can help the Earth. We then shared some of the ideas during our morning meeting. After this, it was time for the Unit 28 Spelling Test. We began using Big Kid spelling test paper today! The super bonus word was demonstration.
Leo shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that he would like to be a scientist when he grows up, he has visited the Great Wall of China, and one of his talents is playing soccer.
Today's math lesson focused on analyzing multi-step word problems to determine whether to use addition and/or subtraction to solve them. After this, we had fun with the silly book Big Chickens!
During science, the boys and girls wrote about the Day 3 developments in the egg. They added information to their egg books and began a mini-book about egg-laying animals. Lucca, Tyler, and Natalie turned the eggs in the incubator after lunch. We read the book Egg by Andrienne Soutter-Perrot to learn why there has to be a rooster on the farm in order for chicks to hatch from eggs. The students were introduced to some new vocabulary so you may get questions about the following terms: reproduction, sperm, and ovary. Some minds were definitely blown by learning that they too started as microscopic eggs!
The specials class of the day was STEAM. I saw some cool robot action in the hallway during this time! The boys and girls also learned more about aboriginal culture during social studies. Ask your child to show you his/her pirbu pirbu decorated with aboriginal symbols.. We did not have time to cut out the boomerangs and try them today. I would suggest gluing the boomerangs on cardboard if you wish to try them outside.
Have a great weekend!
