Welcome back to school! The Question of the Day was: Did you enjoy spring break? Everyone, including the teacher, answered yes!
In recognition of Earth Day, we discussed ways we have helped the planet and actions that make a positive impact on the environment. The students created Earth Day cubes as a reminder of some of these ideas.
In preparation for the arrival of the eggs, the students received a tour of the egg-chick area in the back of the classroom. There are many egg-chick items to explore and egg-chick books to read The students also were introduced to the components of the incubator and how they work. Ask your child for details.
This week's spelling words all have the following pattern: doubling of the final consonant of the base word before adding -ed or -ing. We compared the formation of these words to the way the words in last week's unit were formed. For example, hope is the base word of hoping; hop is the base word of hopping.
Mr. Kosko was a guest reader this morning. He shared the aboriginal dreamtime story Tiddalick the Frog from Australia. Ask your child to tell you the lesson of the story. During the second reading session of the day, we returned to "The Big Orange Splot" in Junior Great Books. The students drew the neighbors muttering about Mr. Plumbean's house and wrote about whether or not they would like to live on his block. Ask your child what he/she said about this!
Today's math lesson involved using addition to find differences. The first graders used number lines to practice this subtraction strategy.
During morning recess, the boys and girls were thrilled to try out the new playscapes installed on the north playground. Ask your child about them! Following lunch recess and Quiet Time, the students enjoyed P.E. and then Computer. The life history timeline projects are really taking shape!
Finally, we returned to Australia in the afternoon. This time, we turned our attention to the Great Barrier Reef. We read and discussed the book Coral Reefs by Gail Gibbons and looked at coral/starfish specimens from a coral reef. We made connections to the book A House for Hermit Crab that we read way back in September. After this, the boys and girls worked on a coral reef animals matching paper.
We are all excited about the arrival of the eggs tomorrow!
