Building on yesterday's trip to see the play The Time Warp Trio, the Question of the Day was: Would you like to travel in time? You can see the responses in the photo above.
It was a morning filled with literacy-based activities in first grade. First the students wrote spelling sentence and completed a spelling practice paper. Then, they worked with consonant digraphs in phonics. We also enjoyed some Flat Stanley mail.
Following a recess break, we practiced mindfulness with Inner Explorer. Today, the students started with the heart and tried sending friendly thoughts and happiness to someone they do not like so much.
Handwriting focused on the capital letters O, G, C, Q, and S. During math, the boys and girls rewrote horizontal subtraction problems vertically in the standard algorithm form.
After Quiet Time, we moved on to science. We began with Ruth Heller's Animals Born Alive and Well, the companion book to Chickens Aren't the Only Ones. Ask the students to tell you about oviparous and viviparous animals! They learned a song about the former that they can share with you. We also examined a poster showing examples of oviparous animals and their eggs. After this, we began preparing blank books to keep track of all the great egg-chick events coming soon. The students numbered the sixty pages and added an egg-shaped title page. The Eggciting Egg to Chick Eggsperience has started!
The specials class of the day was Music. The students met their new music teacher, Ms. Prescott. Following Music class, we visited the fifth grade buddies in their classroom. They had written memoirs which they shared with us. The first graders in turn gave compliments to their buddies about their projects. Ask your child about his/her compliments!
We will continue setting up our egg books tomorrow.
