During reading, we reread "The Big Orange Splot" and discussed some of the students' wonderings. The boys and girls also wrote what they thought Mr. Plumbean was thinking about when he was staring at the splot on his roof. Before heading to lunch, the first graders practiced 2-digit subtraction with and without regrouping.
The specials class of the day was library. During science, I introduced our new unit to the class by reading the book First the Egg. The boys and girls then answered the question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Eight students chose the chicken and twenty students chose the egg. We will circle back to this later and see if anyone wishes to change his/her position. Science ended with the book Chickens Aren't the Only Ones and a preview of the upcoming egg-chick exploration.
During social studies, the boys and girls colored Australia on their world maps and labeled a blank map of the continent with as many details as possible. To do this, they used their Map Champ Atlas books and maps of Australia on display in the classroom.
We will return to Lifeline Theatre to see another play tomorrow. Please send your child to school with a lunch from home. We will eat in the classroom after the trip.
