Today's morning work combined two topics we are currently learning about: plants and alphabetical order. The boys and girls wrote the names of eight flowers in abc order.
During reading, the students completed picture/word sort based on Blueberrries for Sal. They cut, arranged, and glued to place a set of items in one of the following categories: human, bear, or both.
We read When This Box is Full to set the stage for the creation of first grade memory books. The books will have chapters for each month of the school year. The students will write and draw about things they learned and experienced during each month. Today, they prepared blank books by numbering the pages, writing the title on the cover, and gluing in the title page, copyright page, dedication page, and the Table of Contents.
During math, the boys and girls created and answered questions about different kinds of graphs. We focused on interpreting bar graphs and using the information to solve problems. We also shared how we reached our answers. There is usually more than one way to solve a problem. It is important to listen to the ideas of others to build flexible thinking skills.
We observed that the brassica plants had already grown taller. The boys and girls then sequenced pictures showing the steps in how a seed becomes a plant.
The class spent some time working on items in their daily folders. Many have completed, or almost completed, the Me on the Map flip books. The completions rate noticeably increased as I began displaying the projects in the classroom. :)
The final event of the day was sharing name stories. We have not heard everyone's story yet, but the students are enjoying telling and listening to the stories. Ask your child to tell you about someone else's name!
Tomorrow is Ladybug Day! Homework packets are due tomorrow, but the spelling test will be next Monday. Volunteer forms and Scholastic/Highlights orders are also due tomorrow.
