Happy Monday! The boys and girls began the day by checking out the April book order forms. Orders are due by April 4. There will be just one more ordering window after this one.
The Question of the Day was: Did you go to the Maple Syrup Festival this weekend? During the morning meeting, the students were introduced to the Room 104 Pencil Challenge. Each student received one pencil to use during the day. To meet the challenge, the pencil must be returned at the end of the day. It was a bit hairy there for a bit, but everyone successfully kept track of his/her pencil today. We will see what happens on Day 2!
This week's spelling list is comprised of words that have double consonants in the middle. We checked out the words this morning, looked for any tricky ones, and thought about ways to remember how to spell them. After this, it was time for Mail Call! We read more of Flat Stanley's adventures around the country and the world. Look for these to be on display in the hallway soon!
The first graders received the Chapter 5 math workbook today. They completed the Show What You Know page. We will dive into two-digit subtraction and learn more problem-solving strategies later this week!
During reading, the students received another new book: Volume 2 of Junior Great Books. We are skipping the first story, Stone Soup, because we read it earlier when we began studying rocks. The students did read The Big Orange Splot and wrote some wonderings about this Daniel Pinkwater story. Ask your child for a retelling!
Our Inner Explorer session focused on the sense of sight today. Following Quiet Time and P.E. in the afternoon, we read the book On Meadowview Street by Henry Cole. We made connections to the story we read earlier in JGB, as well as to the school butterfly garden. The boys and girls shared messages that would remind visitors to be respectful of the space. They then decorated signs with these messages and we went outside to place them in the garden. The first graders are the garden guardians. I love that they are eager to perform good deeds and take care care of the environment.
We ended the day by beginning to read One Grain of Rice by Demi. We will finish the story tomorrow after our field trip to the Chicago Children's Museum. Please be sure to send a lunch to school with your child. We will eat in the classroom following the trip.
