The boys and girls began the day with a morning work paper about skeletons. Ask your child if he/she read the description and directions before he/she began working. Later in the day, we read and discussed the book Bone By Bone: Comparing Animal Skeletons.
After our morning meeting, during which I modeled taking the time to read the skeleton paper before doing any work, many boys and girls made some corrections on their papers.. Next, we organized the materials in our desks. Then we worked in our Phonics books. Today's lesson focused on final blends.
We continued reading A Grain of Rice. Pong Lo is now daily receiving rice in special containers from the Emperor. We used our addition skills to see how many grains of rice were being delivered up to the seventeenth day. Ask your child to demonstrate the doubling!
Before heading to Art, the first graders had a mini-lesson about writing the numerals 0 to 9. I demonstrated proper size and stroke formation. During our regular math class, the boys and girls worked on finding the sums of four 2-digit numbers. They worked in pairs. After both partners solved a problem, they would check to see if they had the same answer and then shared how they solved the problem.
Following recess and our Inner Explorer session, we returned to bones again. This time, however, the first graders observed casts of dinosaur fossils, models of dinosaur skulls, and one very intriguing dinosaur fossil: a coprolite specimen. Ask your child to tell you about the teeth and claws, as well as to tell you what coprolite is!
We concluded our school day with a visit from Parissa's parents. Our guest speakers explained Persian New Year to us, explained the significance of 7-seen items, and helped the students make lovely spring flower pots to take home. Happy Nowruz!
STEAM class takes place tomorrow!
