The first graders encountered a batch of graded papers on their desks when they arrived today. After checking green folders for notes and work, the boys and girls put the graded work in their folders to take back home. Please go over the corrected work with your children.
The students each received an “All About Being a Good Student” poster to complete. They responded to several writing prompts and began coloring the posters. The project will be continued tomorrow morning.
This week’s spelling words have either the short o or the short e sound. We examined the words, discussed their meanings, found rhyming words, solved analogies, and identified synonyms. The spelling test will be given on Monday, September 24 instead of this Friday. Friday will be all ladybugs all the time!
The first graders were formally introduced to two class pets that had been quietly with us since the first day of school. Crabby and Shelly the hermit crabs joined us for reading. They stayed tucked in their shells for a while, but then became intrigued by the story being read: A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. Following recess, the boys and girls wrote a quick mini-story inspired by the adventures of the hermit crab in the story. Ask your child where his/her hermit crab walked and what he/she found there!
During math, we reviewed using tally marks and completing tally charts. The class answered questions based on tally charts. Look for a math homework worksheet for Lesson 10.1. This should be completed and returned to school tomorrow.
After lunch recess, the first graders wrote their assignments in their students planners and read books while listening to music during Quiet Time. We then checked on the ladybugs and the ladybug larvae before beginning our first plant investigation. The first graders planted brassica seeds in little cups of soil. They watered them and watched as the cups were placed under a grow light. We will make observations about what happens over the next several weeks.
Our social studies lesson of the day focused on learning about our place in the bigger world. We read My Global Address and Me On the Map. We examined the world map the globe, and our classroom rug. The boys and girls also looked at a model that showed the relationship between home/school, city, state, country, continent, and planet. Ask your child to tell you about this.
The final event of the day was Music with Ms. Lambert. Ms. Lambert will dismiss the class every E Day.
The boys and girls will add to their hermit crab projects tomorrow. It is also highly likely that there will be a fire drill tomorrow or Wednesday. Please speak with your child about the importance of fire drills and ask him/her to tell you the procedures we follow at school.
