The boys and girls completed a different kind of word search this morning. They had to see how many times they could find the exact same word: school. After this, the first graders took their first spelling test of the year. Most spelling tests will have 15 words, 10 bonus words, and one super bonus word. Today's super bonus word was fingers.
We practiced forming the letters of the alphabet in American Sign Language. Your child has brought home a paper to continue the practice at home. During reading/math, each child created a bar graph showing how many of each letter of the alphabet was in his/her name. They then worked with a partner to compare names. Ask your child who he/she worked with, what letters their names had in common, and what letters one partner's name had but the other did not.
Another reading/math lesson continued the focus on graphs with the book Tiger Math. The book showed real life uses of picture graphs, circle graphs, bar graphs, and line graphs. Ask your child about the book!
In the afternoon, the class was introduced to the new ladybug center in the classroom. Also, the fish were officially named Goldy and Shadow (two very popular suggestions). Following art class, we read and discussed the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The students were encouraged to try their hand at being courageous and creative. They made their marks on their own dots. I will have to find a great place to display their colorful dots!
Have a wonderful weekend Ladybug Day takes place next Friday, September 24.
