Welcome to Week 18 of First Grade! The Question of the Day was: Have you ever held a bird?
Today's writing lesson focused on the use of quotation marks. We read a book (Sneezy the Snowman) with a lot of dialogue and identified when quotation marks were used. Each student wrote a conversation between between a snowman and a bird, then checked his/her work. I have sent home a copy of your child's writing along with the Check Your Work guide sheet.
Unit 16 in Spelling features words with the rather confusing schwa sound. It sounds like the short u sound /uh/, but it is made during a syllable that is not stressed or emphasized. For example, in the words away, another, and again, the schwa sound is found at the beginning of the word. Schwa is usually represented with an upside down letter e.
During reading, we read two Jon Klassen books: I Want My Hat Back and We Found a Hat. We will see a play based on the latter story tomorrow. The students learned about tortoises and their desert habitat in the American southwest.
The day's math lesson focused on comparing 3-digit numbers using the >, =, and < symbols. The students were introduced to Greedy the Gator before practicing using these symbols on their own.
Mr. C complimented the first graders for their listening and direction following during their hockey lesson today. When we returned to the class, it was time to check our salt and water experiment that we started last week. Ask your child for details about what he/she saw and how it related to the book Water's Way that we read after making observations.
During social studies, we reviewed A New Coat for Anna and read a funny companion book "Charlie Needs a New Cloak" by Tomie dePaola. Yes, the quotation marks are in the title! After looking at samples of wool, the boys and girls made their own woolly sheep with cotton balls. They also watched a live webcam of sheep in a barn. Please check backpack mail for a note about the book A New Coat for Anna. We will not use the book again until Friday, so it can be kept at home until then.
Please check home folders for a food permission slip for an activity that will be presented by a guest speaker on Thursday.
We will visit Lifeline Theatre tomorrow. Students should bring a lunch from home to eat in the classroom when we return. Thank you!
